The authors add, "Genome-wide scans identified novel genetic variants associated with odor perception, providing support for the hypothesis that the primate olfactory receptor repertoire has degenerated over time. New York: Springer Science + Business Media. The new results from East Asian and diverse populations suggest that the genetics underlying the ability to detect odors remains constant across people from different backgrounds. These earlier studies include primarily Caucasian participants. 'How the motion of DNA controls gene activity.' ScienceDaily. The genetic analysis also identified three associations between genes for scent receptors and specific odors that scientists had previously reported. Institute of Science and Technology Austria. ![]() These findings support the hypothesis that the sensitivity of humans' and other primates' sense of smell has degraded over time due to changes in the set of genes that code for our smell receptors. ![]() In combination with previously published results, the researchers find that people with the ancestral versions (the version shared with other non-human primates) of the scent receptors tend to rate the corresponding odor as more intense. Participants carried different versions of the musk and underarm odor receptor genes, and those genetic variations affected how the person perceived the scents. The team identified two new receptors, one that detects a synthetic musk used in fragrances and another for a compound in human underarm odor. Then they repeated the experiment for six odors in an ethnically diverse population of 364 people to confirm their results. In a new study, researchers screened the genomes of 1,000 Han Chinese people to find genetic variations linked to how the participants perceived 10 different scents. Fungal genetics could help develop novel biotechnologies. ![]() Scientists can combine these differences in scent perception with a person's genetics to discover the role of various scent receptors. Everyone experiences smells in their own unique way - the same scent can be pleasant, too intense or even undetectable to different noses.

![]() On the flipside, apps use the mic on your phone to pick up the sound, which means it could pick up other noises and affect the accuracy of the tuning. ![]() First, clip-on tuners register vibrations from the instrument and translate them into frequencies. There are a few things to consider when deciding between an app and, say, a clip-on tuner. Some people ask, “Shouldn’t we all just use ‘real’ tuners?” The big question is whether or not guitar tuner apps are reliable. If that’s you, that means you could have a guitar tuner with you wherever you go. Most people have a smartphone and those who do often have it with them at all times. Second, guitar tuner apps are convenient. ![]() Tuning apps almost always have an “upgrade” option which costs money and has extra features, but there are plenty of free tuning apps that are accurate (more on that later). If you’re on the fence about using an app for tuning your guitar, think about the benefits of using an app versus using a clip-on or plug-in tuner.įirst, tuning apps are often free whereas other types of tuners have price tags. Guitar tuning apps provide an easy and (sometimes) reliable way to tune your guitar The point here is to help you pick your favorite app.īut first, let’s look at the general idea of tuning apps (and whether or not they’re even reliable). What I am going to do is cover four of the best guitar tuner apps, describing them and giving you the pros and cons.
![]() Launching apps and adding them to the dock still works pretty much the same as any other dock. As a result, though, it is not the easiest, most user-friendly dock around. It has so many features that you’d just skip over many of them even if I did type them all out. Although both of these are essentially docks, Nexus dock is perhaps the best there is for Windows. I’m not getting philosophical here, but that’s exactly the distance, or difference between Nexus dock and Rocket dock. There’s a distance between the land and the sky, as you may have noticed. Winstep Nexus Dock – Feature-packed, not so simple Unlike some other docks or the taskbar, Rocket dock cannot allocate a dedicated space for itself. That is, Windows will either slide over or under it, depending on your preferences. This functionality seems broken and is often not reliable though especially as long as there is a taskbar.Īlso, Rocket dock will always overlap with open windows. You can also let minimized windows appear on the dock if you wish to use it like the Mac OS dock. You can also extend the functionality using docklets, also available on the website. The best place to find these is the Rocket dock’s official website. It also has themes and the internet is full of them, the dock being so popular. The animations are so smooth with Rocket dock that it often feels like an integrated part of the system. I’d suggest not changing a lot in the icon settings though since the default animation and zoom settings are quite ideal. You can also adjust the quality of icons depending upon your hardware. These include the ability to change individual icons, change the position of the dock, place it behind open windows or on top of them, etc. It does still have some of the basic features you might want in your dock. It makes Rocket dock one of the simplest docks available for Windows. But there’s a good side to this apparent lack of features. To be honest, it could actually use some more features. The development on Rocket dock seemingly ceased years ago and there are no new features added. ![]() Rocket dock has been one of the most popular dock options for Windows. You should also check out these cool Windows taskbar tips and tricks for a better experience. These docks not only look beautiful but are also highly customizable. Try them to easily access your favorite apps. The following 2 Mac OS like docks hugely resembles the one found on Apple’s computers. Here are two MacOS docs for your Windows 10 PC that should satisfy your needs. Good, but if your needs are limited to looks or simply an app launcher that complements the Windows taskbar. There are quite a few docks available on Windows, and some of them are quite good. There’s also the added functionality that you can access these usually from anywhere without having to minimize currently open windows. Not to mention they look much fancier than a start menu.Ī dock also manages to allow you to add many apps folders or files on your desktop without making it look cluttered. While Mac OS docs don’t offer a lot to the Windows 10 desktop in terms of features, they do add a layer of convenience. This, in turn, has led many developers to take on the challenge and deliver a good experience to users on Windows. Yet, app launchers or MacOS like docks have been quite in demand over the years on Windows. The concept of an app launcher or a dock on a Windows desktop might seem redundant to some. ![]() The techniques use different teaching methods and physical senses to support and reinforce the child’s memorization of the word. ![]() Q: Do I really need to do all five techniques for every word?Ī: Start out by using all five techniques with each new word. ![]() Give him time to grow confident with his current set of words, and avoid overwhelming the child with new words when he hasn’t yet become familiar with the old words. The child is learning how to learn the words and is developing pattern recognition approaches that will speed his progress. We have been on the same five words for a week!Ī: It is not unusual to have to repeat the same set of words several times, especially in the first weeks of sight words instruction. All you need is a flash card for each of the sight words you are covering in the lesson. The lessons get the child up to a baseline level of competence that is then reinforced by the games, which take them up to the level of mastery. The exercises combine many repetitions of the word (seeing, hearing, speaking, spelling, and writing) with physical movements that focus the child’s attention and cement each word into the child’s long-term memory. These techniques work together to activate different parts of the brain. Table Writing - A child writes the letters on a table, first looking at and then not looking at the flash card.Air Writing - A child says the word, then writes the letters in the air in front of the flash card.Arm Tapping - The child says the word and then spells out the letters while tapping them on his arm, then reads the word again.Spell Reading - The child says the word and spells out the letters, then reads the word again.See & Say - A child sees the word on the flash card and says the word while underlining it with her finger.Introduce new sight words using this sequence of five teaching techniques: You do not want one child to be regularly embarrassed in front of his classmates when he struggles with words the others have already mastered! NOTE: Be sure the child has a pretty good grasp of a sight word before using it in a game, especially if you are working with a group of children. The games are of course the most entertaining part of the sight words program, but they need to wait until after the first part of the sight words lesson. We have numerous sight words games that will make that repetition fun and entertaining for you and your child. Learning sight words takes lots of repetition. Use your game time to provide lots of repetition for these words until the child has thoroughly mastered them. Note: The child should have a good grasp of - but does not need to have completely mastered - a word before it gets replaced in your lesson plan. If he has trouble with more than two of the review words, then set aside the new words you were planning to introduce and devote that day’s lesson to review. If your child struggles to recognize a word, cover that word again in the main lesson, going through all five teaching techniques. Go through the See & Say exercise for each of the review words. Remember: solid knowledge of a few words is better than weak knowledge of a lot of words! Words often need to be covered a few times for the child to fully internalize them. 2.2 Review Old Wordsīegin each subsequent lesson by reviewing words from the previous lesson. As your child gets more advanced, you might increase the number of words you work on in each lesson. This part of a sight words session should be brisk and last no more than ten minutes. This lesson should establish basic familiarity with the new words. Then introduce the second word, and go through all five teaching techniques, and so on. Hold up the flash card for the first word, and go through all five techniques, in order. Introduce one word at a time, using the five teaching techniques. When first beginning sight words, work on no more than three unfamiliar words at a time to make it manageable for your child.
